The Beginning of a Quirky Tradition
Let’s talk about Taco Tuesday. This has been a tradition in my house since the kids were itty-bitty. I honestly can’t tell you how it started — it was probably just one of those quirky ideas that turned into something lasting.
One day, I loaded up my car with my kids, their friends, a cooler filled with their favorite drinks, and a container of sour cream (because anyone who’s ever ordered a 10-pack of tacos from Taco Bell knows how expensive that sour cream add-on gets). I don’t even think they have a 10-pack anymore — that’s how long ago this was!
We’d head to the park, set up at a picnic bench, eat our tacos, and play on the playground until the sun went down. And if it was raining? No problem — Taco Tuesday happened right there on the living room floor. Those moments were messy, silly, and absolutely perfect.
Fast Forward to Today
Life has a way of moving fast. The kids grew up, Taco Tuesday took a bit of a hiatus, and schedules got hectic. But this year, we decided to bring it back — and it’s been awesome.
Now, instead of Taco Bell picnic benches, we head over to La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant in town for their $1 tacos. I still go classic beef with tomatillo sauce (a California kid needs a little heat). My wife is loyal to her shredded chicken soft tacos, my son goes for chicken too, and my oldest daughter sticks with beef.
And my youngest at Iowa State University? She’s off doing her own thing, probably making her own tacos somewhere — but I know she’s all about those fish tacos.
