An Adult Snow Day

Today was a snow day—but not the kind your kids dream about.
This was a full-blown adult snow day.

The snow-day saga actually started yesterday with just enough snow to be annoying. I took the day off to burn up some end-of-year vacation time that would otherwise disappear if I didn’t use it (which never happens, because I like trips and vacations). Knowing today’s forecast was calling for snow and single-digit temperatures, I went full responsible adult mode and cleared every speck of snow off the driveway yesterday.

And then today came… and it came hard.

Snow falling like it had something to prove, temperatures that make you question your life choices, and zero motivation to go outside until necessary. So I didn’t rush it. I waited until around three, when the snow was supposed to stop, and instead we did something wildly unproductive by modern standards.

We sat.
We watched Christmas movies.
We just enjoyed being together.

Did I get a whole lot done… or did I?

We live in a world where it feels like if we’re not doing something—baking, running here, running there, checking boxes—we’re somehow failing. Even with my flipping side hustle, I caught myself thinking, I should be listing something on eBay. Marketplace. Somewhere. But I didn’t.

I sat with my wife and absolutely overdosed on Christmas movies.

And honestly? Sometimes that’s exactly what you need to recharge.

Tomorrow I’m hoping to be a little more productive—maybe make some caramels, throw together homemade Chex Mix, bake banana bread, and get a few items listed online. But today wasn’t about productivity. It was about presence.

I did forget to mention one thing—my son left to see his girlfriend for a family event they had planned. That part kind of sucked, if I’m being honest. One thing kids probably don’t realize is just how much their safety means to us as parents. And let’s be real… my son usually drives like he’s auditioning for Talladega Nights—full “Shake and Bake” mode.

So I watched my phone, made sure he arrived safely, because Messenger doesn’t always work on his phone—or rather, he doesn’t check it. He made it there safely, and I know he’s having a great time, which is what really matters.

I eventually got the snow plowed, and now here I am—watching yet another ridiculously predictable Christmas movie with the same storyline as the last ten. Honestly, it feels like tomorrow might be the perfect time to pull out National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation after I knock out a few things.

This season has a way of reminding us of something important:
There will always be stuff to do.

If you don’t get it all done, don’t worry about it. The list will still be there tomorrow. But time spent with the people you love? That’s a little more valuable—and it’s not something you can put off until later.

So if you find yourself stuck inside on an adult snow day, maybe give yourself permission to slow down. Sit. Watch the movie. Drink the coffee. Enjoy the moment.

The snow will melt.
The to-do list will survive.
But times like this are worth holding onto a little longer. ☕❄️
