The Art of Chilling and Relaxing

— Something I’m Still Learning

This week, I did something I don’t do often enough… I took time off. Not for a project, not for a family event, not because something broke and needed my IT-guy magic — but simply to get away with my wife. Just us. No deadlines, no meetings, no patch updates, no laptop rollouts… just breathing room.

And let me tell you: I’m so glad I did.

When you’ve been married a long time, there’s something special about sneaking away from the hustle and the noise and just being together. No pressure, no schedule, no expectations. Just two people who still genuinely enjoy hanging out, talking, laughing, and being goofy.

And yes — thrift stores were involved.
Because what kind of couple would we be if we couldn’t hit a few thrift shops and hunt for treasures like two caffeinated pirates on a mission? Luckily, we found some good ones today. If you’re going on a thrifting adventure, the last thing you want is to come back with an empty trunk. Especially when you’re secretly hoping one of these ventures will “pop off” enough that you can quit your job and do this full-time. A guy can dream, right?

We even ventured out a bit farther than where we’re staying, and that ended up being the golden ticket — better shops, less crowding, more finds. Worth every mile.

Of course, I did get a few interruptions from work. That’s pretty normal at this point. Put out a small fire, answer a message, then jump right back into vacation mode. But moments like these always remind me of something important:

A job is never more important than your family.

If it is… you’re doing it wrong.

My wife makes me better. She pushes me, supports me, believes in me, listens to my dad jokes (which — let’s be honest — are top tier), and chooses to do this life with me. No job will ever be that committed to me. I can find another place to work… but I don’t want to go through this world without her.

So here’s to hoping that one day, these little getaways become more frequent. More road trips. More weird thrift stores. More inside jokes. More moments where we get to slow down and enjoy the “art of relaxing” — something I’m still learning, but definitely enjoying when I get it right.

Life isn’t perfect, but when you have someone who’s willing to put up with your quirks, laugh at your jokes, and join your adventures… it’s pretty damn awesome.

Hey!

Welcome to Scott’s Brewed Thoughts, a corner of the internet fueled by caffeine, curiosity, and the occasional midlife epiphany.

Here, I pour out whatever’s percolating — from random observations and life’s distractions to reflections on family, work, technology, and why the Wi-Fi only breaks when you’re on a deadline.

Think of it as your morning coffee with a side of laughter and a sprinkle of “maybe that actually makes sense.”
