Honoring the Brave — A Veterans Day Reflection

Today we celebrate the brave souls who have protected our country. And if you’re anything like me, you’re proud to call some of those heroes’ family.

A Legacy of Service

My grandpa served in the U.S. Navy as both a corpsman and an embalmer. I can’t begin to imagine what he saw or experienced during his time in service. But I know one thing for sure — God kept him safe. He was the kind of man who carried Jesus with him wherever he went, and for the work he did, he also saw others in their final moments. His courage and faith left a mark on everyone who knew him.

Then there’s my wife’s grandpa — another incredible man who served in the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). (Fun trivia: the Air Force didn’t officially become its own branch until 1947.) His job was to repair the belly of bombers after they returned from missions — a task that required someone small enough to squeeze into those tight spaces and skilled enough to make the aircraft flight-ready again. Over the years, I’ve heard some amazing stories from him about those days — stories filled with grit, ingenuity, and quiet heroism.

The Next Generation

My dad carried that same spirit of service, joining the Air Force as a dog handler and part of the security patrol. He and his team trained the dogs — loyal partners who stood by their sides through long nights and uncertain moments.

My wife’s dad also served in the Air Force, working in information security. I’ve heard some pretty cool stories from his time stationed in Hawaii — proof that even paradise can come with a uniform and responsibility to protect.

My Own Journey

And then there’s me. I proudly served in the Navy as Damage Control — doing everything from plumbing to engine repair. It was tough work but it taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to stay calm when things didn’t go according to plan (skills that come in handy even in IT!).

Gratitude Beyond Words

I’m incredibly thankful for my family and for every man and woman who has ever worn a uniform. Their sacrifices — both big and small — allow us to enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted. Because of dedicated individuals who gave their time, their energy, and in many cases, their lives, we get to live in safety and freedom today.

So to all veterans — past and present — thank you.
Your courage and service will never be forgotten.

Happy Veterans Day
